nursing friendly spring and summer wardrobe

Biggest surprise of motherhood for me so far : How To Get Dressed.

I know, it’s not what I expected either.

But for a girl who used to wear short fitted dresses with tights pretty much 24/7, it hasn’t been easy to adjust to the real world of nursing friendly clothes that look alright when baby wearing and are decent to sit on the floor and play with my babies.

The funny thing is, I bought pretty much ZERO clothes during pregnancy. I think I got by with two sets of maternity leggings one maternity top and a jumpsuit. I didn’t feel inclined to invest in a maternity wardrobe when I knew that part of my life wasn’t going to last very long.

But once my babies were born, I quickly realized that very few of my existing clothes were practical for twin mama life. So I’ve had a lot of fun updating my wardrobe over the last year! These are things I look for:

  1. Nursing Friendly. This could mean dresses that have buttons down the front, double side zippers, or pinafore style straps. Tops and bottoms are also so easy to nurse in, and I quickly realized that jeans and shorts are a lot more practical for me now than skirts.
  2. Baby Wearing Friendly. This is a huge one for me, as I baby wear at least 50% of the time! I really like clothes to feel comfortable under my wraps or packs. While I used to wear a lot of bulky sweaters or looser fitting tops, I’ve found that tighter clothes are much more comfortable to baby wear with. I also prefer a shirt tucked into very high waisted pants and shorts- it just makes for a nice clean line under my baby carrier!
  3. Well Dressed. Honestly, I’m not a leggings and t-shirt kind of person. I find that I am so much more prepared to face the day when I am well dressed and completely put together! I always take a shower and get a cute outfit on first thing in the morning. This is totally just a personal preference, but it works for me!

With that in mind, here are some of my current favorite pieces for spring and summer!

Abercrombie Mom Shorts

These shorts are my absolute FAVORITE! They have a super high wait line with just a bit of elastic, so they have a nice snug fit around the waist without being uncomfortable at all. They are a thick, high quality denim that doesn’t stretch out or wrinkle. These shorts are about $60 dollars, but definitely a worthwhile investment! I love how classy they look with my baby carriers, and of course it’s always easy to nurse in a tee shirt and shorts. They run a bit small, I am normally a 26 but I have a size 27. The 26 fit as well, but I wanted a bit of a looser fit around my legs. The color I have is acid wash!

A& E Paper Bag Shorts

I also love these high waisted paper bag shorts from American Eagle! The quality is not quite as nice as the shorts from Abercrombie, but I love how elegant these shorts are. They also come with a denim waist sash, but I left it off…because, you know, twins. These shorts are very soft and lightweight, they will be perfect for the summer heat! I like to pair them with a floral graphic tee like this one from target. These high waisted shorts also look great with my baby carriers! I am wearing a size 2 (26).

Universal Thread Puff Sleeve Dress

I love this puff sleeved dress by Universal Thread! The pattern is so lovely and feminine and the puffed sleeves add such a fun style element. This dress has a smocked top which makes it so easy to pull over your shoulder to nurse in! It also comes in so many pretty colors and patterns. This dress definitely runs big! I am wearing a size xs and it is a little too large for me.

Maxi Skirt

A maxi skirt with a top is always a great choice! I love this for around the house, running errands, or as a swim cover up, which is how I’m using it here! I’m wearing a size xs in the black floral pattern.
